This week we will reach the end of the last of the first grade reading books.  This means the last of the new spelling words, the last of the new sight words and the last pages in our reading workbooks.  All the children are reading, and all have improved beautifully over the course of the year.  In our last week of school a few things will come home to illustrate the progress we have made this year.

I went to a teacher's workshop once where it was proposed that one of the reasons that we see more behavior issues at the end of May and into June is that the children are getting anxious about leaving the teacher and the classmates who have made up so much of their lives this year.  This statement resonates with me as a true thing.  These past couple of weeks have seen overall good behavior, but an increase in the children's "yuckiness" towards each other.  The girls have become more likely to pair up with one friend and exclude another.  The boys have been trying out some very mild but annoying language and have become very loud and silly in class.  We have even seen a little bit of "Johnny loves Mary" type whispering and note passing.  First grade is a little early for that one, but the tears are just as real.  You could help with a pep talk about maintaining school manners for three more weeks and being kind to classmates.  Please also keep bedtimes similar to the way you had them through the school year. I have seen some very worn out children, especially on Mondays.  I will keep the children very busy, right up to the last day.  The activities are changing to more special projects and fun jobs.  But I have found that keeping the children busy and challenged makes these last few weeks fly by.  And I thank you for any help you can give me.

Please save this date!  On Friday morning June 8 our class will be performing a presentation of short plays for your viewing pleasure.  The performance will be first thing in the morning, 9:15 in hopes that some working parents can take just an hour or two off from work to see us.  Of course, it won't be possible for all.  More information will follow when the date gets closer.  Work on the plays is proceeding nicely.  It is going to be a fun event.

As always, feel free to contact me with questions or comments.  Keep in mind that time sensitive issues, such as a change in dismissal plans for that day, should probably come in by "backpack express."  I am not really able to check my e-mail while the children are in the room needing my attention.
