Week of February 13 - 16

To CELEBRATE our most recent achievement of earning the Governor's GOLD MEDAL FOR HIGHEST ACHIEVING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL we will have GOLD DAY on Thursday, February 16.  Please wear yellow or gold on this day to celebrate our students' hard work.  Students will receive cake at lunch and a gold medal for this wonderful honor!

Please remember this is a 4-day week.  No school on Friday, February 17 or Monday, February 20!  Enjoy your long, relaxing weekend! :)

February is Black History Month.  Our writing class will be choosing a famous African American to research this week.  Students will also create a visual to represent the famous American.  Check with your student for details!

REQUEST:  Parents - we are in need of more glue sticks for our class supply closet.  If you are able, please send in a few new glue sticks.  THANK YOU!

Spring Parent Conference forms have been sent home.     Please feel free to email me your first, second, and third preference, or send it back in with your student on Monday. 

If you would like to earn an "E" in Health on your report card for the 3rd 9 Weeks, see the attachment below.  All projects due on March 2.

Entries will be due to me towards the end of February.  We will have 5 winning entries from our homeroom.  If one of our entries is chosen, our class can win a trip to Stone Mountain Park for a FREE field trip!  Entries due on Leap Day!! (Wednesday, February 29)

Writing/Grammar

Weekly Grammar Skill:  Until the writing test, we will be focused on grammar through our writing lessons

Writing:  We will take a look back at all three genres we have studied this year:  Narrative, Persuasive, Informational.  Students will be practicing prompts in all three areas as we buckle down and prepare for the writing test on March 7.

Autobiography:  I look forward to reading each autobiography!  They will be returned soon! :)


Reading/Word Study:  

*Please note that the two reading classes have different agendas.  Please ask your student which class they are in to know which information is pertinent to your child.

All Classes AR Requirement:  Next AR Due Date is Friday, March 2

Despereaux Reading Class

Novel Study:  Students will finish reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.  You should see students working in folders on different activities and literature circle jobs while we read.  On Thursday, they will take the AR test, as well as take an open book final exam.

Reading Skills of the Week:    symbolism, theme, point of view, genre

Word Study Greek/Latin Roots:   super-, sur- meaning on top of, above or beyond;  Students will have a variety of vocabulary/spelling words beginning with this latin prefixes.
Homonyms of the week:  course, corse

Test:  Wednesday, March 22

Super Sonic Reading Class

Novel StudyTrumpet of the Swan by E.B. White - Students will be journaling throughout the reading.   We will finish the book this week.  On Thursday, students will take the AR Test and an open-book final exam. 

Skill of the week:  context clues, theme, plot

Science

Sum of Parts and Matter - we'll be using lots of hands on examples to verify that an object is the sum of its parts.  We'll also be taking a closer look into matter.

Key Words:  mass, weight, gram, pan-balance, matter, solid, liquid, gas, density, conductor, insulator, volume

Test:  Thursday, February 23 (T/TH Class) and Friday, February 25 (M/W Class)
