Senior religion runs with a collegiate approach, meeting 5 times a cycle. This course is a seminar where every woman will be expected to participate every session. It is based on much reflection and deep thinking, and consistently involves components of critical thinking. Building on what the students learned in their first 3 years of religion at SHA, this course is quite unique and now moves the students into their own personal spirituality. It runs on the principles of "rigor, relevance and relationships", which is also the motto Bill and Melinda Gates are using for their educational endeavors. I would add "reflection and reaction" to incorporate 5 R's. It is writing intensive with over 40 theological reflection papers required. The year is divided into two content areas: fall semester is "Christian Life Choices", has 2 textbooks for class work and covers very practical, life- challenging topics, ie. career, money, growth, marriage etc. Spring semester covers a different curriculum: "Adult Spirituality and Womanhood." It uses 3 different additional textbooks in class...and is heavy on commitment issues. The process for the course remains the same both semesters. For this coming year, 2011-12, the senior Leadership Program will also be happening for one class each week through the religion department, with an emphasis on college application processing through Noviance for the first semester. Second semester will incorporate leadership studies from various texts and sources; as well as safe dating input specifically geared to college life. It is a direct attempt to make them ready for college. Mondays will be "morality Mondays", when we discuss and explore contemporary ethical issues from the current media. Students and parents will sign a contract to insure everyone understands the curriculum concept and the course responsibilities. Re: policy for homework. In this course, all assignments are due on the day due! During the class period assigned. No emails unless home sick. Colleges have consequences for unmet deadlines, now I am outlining my consequences. Deadlines do matter to me. Professional people, including professional students, are responsible and reliable. Deadlines are an indicator of responsible behavior and of future collegiate/career/life success.
