Doing weekly maintenance can save you time and money.  Some tips to help you keep your computer safe and running.

Tips:

  1. Make sure that you have a good anti-virus, ad-aware, spyware, and firewall program loaded on your computer.  This can protect your computer from serious damage.  There are many good programs out there to use.  Check out the great web site below for finding the programs you need.
  2. Run scans on your computer to clean out old and temporary files. This will help speed it up.
  3. Organize your files into folders.  You can download FolderMarker to help you color-code your folders to make it easier to organize and find.  Check out the link below.
  4. Backup your files for safety sake.  Burn your files to a CD, put them on a flash drive, or install a second hard drive.  This protects you should your hard drive crash.
  5. Have pictures but the document is too large to send?  Try compressing them!  Double-click on a picture in your document or Power Point.  Select the Picture tab>click compress>choose the all pictures in document box>click the web box>click OK>click apply.  This will reduce all of your picture sizes from 200 dpi to 96 dpi.  Now, it is small enough to send!
  6. Don't forget to clean your computer.  If you have an air compressor blow out the keybord and CPU at least once a year.  If you do not have an air compressor you can purchase a can of compressed air made for cleaning computers!  This protects your investment by reducing the amount of dust that builds up and can overheat your computer.

Tricks

  1. Looking for a ready-made PowerPoint presentation?  Try going to Google.com>type the subject you are looking for, then filetype:ppt.  For example, volcanoes filetype:ppt.
  2. Want to see what is on your computer.  Right click on the start button and click Explore.  This will open up your files so you can see what programs you have, move files around, or copy them.
  3. You can make movies out of your photos.  Try using Microsoft Movie Maker.  It is free with Windows SP2.  Not only can you make movies but ads, family albums, and more.
  4. Need to keep track of how long students are on the computer?  Look for computer timers.  Check the link below for a free example.
