Description: In this course we will study Earth and Space. We will learn about minerals, rocks, fossils, weathering, erosion, plate tectonics, oceanography, and objects in space.

Supplies: Each student will bring the following items to class each day:

  • A course textbook which must be covered at all times. Please do not use contact paper or small stretch covers.

  • A pen and a pencil

  • A 1" green binder with dividers as follows: 1. Notes and homework, 2. Tests, 3. Lab,     4. Science Journal, 5. Extra paper

At the end of the first semester, papers may be emptied out of the binder, but the student should save papers until the end of the school year.

Grading Criteria: The points system is used.

  • Tests: 3 or 4 tests will be given during each nine week quarter. Each test is usually worth between 25-60 points. Quizzes worth 10-15 points may be given. Test days for Science are Monday and Wednesday.

  • Homework: Most homework assignments are worth 5 points.

  • Science article reviews (SAR): Each student will write one review during each quarter. On the first day of each quarter, the due dates for the reviews will be announced. Each SAR is worth 24 points. The student may choose a recent full-length article from the newspaper, a magazine or an online news report. The one paragraph science briefs in the newspaper should not be used. There are two forms that must be printed off my webpage for each SAR. One includes instructions and the other is the grading rubric.

  • Projects: Students will complete several projects throughout the year. The style of the project and the point worth of each project will vary. Some may be individual projects, while others may be group projects.

  • Extra Credit: Homework and SAR: A student may do an extra credit assignment if she/he has not missed more than one homework assignment during the quarter. The student may do an additional SAR to make up for the missed homework. If a student missed handing in an SAR, she/he may write 3 SARs ( 8 points each) to make up for the missed SAR.

  • Extra Credit: Test: If a student does poorly on a test, she/he may do extra credit which relates to the concepts/questions missed on the test. In this case, what the actual extra credit will be is up to the student. It may be additional text questions or a creative project   that relates to the missed concepts. Point worth will vary. A student may not do an additional SAR for missed concepts on a test.

  • Extra Credit on Edline: Each quarter I will post an assignment column labeled "Extra Credit" or "E.C." with a point worth of zero. Extra credit is optional and the grade averages of students not doing E.C. will not be affected by this assignment column.

  • All work should be handed in on time, except in the case of absence.

Each student will keep a portfolio of his/her science work. This will be kept in a file in the classroom. It will include selected works by the student and will be used at the student-led conference.

On-line school science textbooks are available to the students.
