Reading Into the Circle

Writer's Workshop will be up and running from the first day of school in Room 229. We will have had many focus lessons and the children and I will write every day. I hope you will check back from time to time to see the workshop in progress.

Our class will be using Units of Study for Primary Writing by Lucy Caulkins.  First Hand Heineman 2005 and
the 6+1 Traits of Writing Program by Ruth Culham. Scholastic Books 2003.

The 6+1 Traits are:

Ideas: the meaning and message of the writing
Organization: the way the writing is structured
Voice: the way the writer lets his/her own special personality "shine"
Word Choice: the vocabulary the writer uses
Sentence Fluency: the way the words and sentences flow
Conventions: spelling, punctuation, grammar,capital letters
Presentation: the appearance of the piece.

Throughout the months of September, October and November our primary focus lessons will be been on generating ideas, organizing our pieces, using conventions of writing and final presentation of two books.  We will also have a fall author celebration.

During the months of December, January and February we will continue to develop skills as story tellers and also learn the craft of letter writing.  The children will begin to learn to revise stories.  We will have a winter writing celebration.
