February 13 -17 Our class is reading about the life and times of our beloved 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. We are learning about the hard times and difficult decisions of Honest Abe. The children are learning the American Folk song "Hard Times" by Stephen Foster. February 6-10 We finally found the time to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns. We are lucky to have the help of Mr. Burns, Bridget's Dad to help us with our Scottish studies. We learned about tartans, Loch Ness, amazing castles, some Scottish words, haggis and so much more... We also made Scottish Shortbread Cookies and learned Auld Lang Syne. January 30 - February 3
We are learning about the legend of the groundhog and at least half of us hopes he predicts an early spring this year. We also have the museum visiting to show us fossils and do a presentation on Dinosaurs. January 23 - 27
Our class will have a wonderful week learning about the Lunar New Year. We read dragon stories and non-fiction books about the celebration of the "Chinese New Year" in the states. We created tangram puzzles and enjoyed tasty traditional treats. We are also finally caught up on all the missed work from all the delays and snow days. Hurray!! January 16 - 20 We are learning about the civil rights movement and the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The children are very interested in his early life. January 9 - 13
We are reading about something wonderful and precious to most children TOYS. The children are learning about the past through the study of our parent's and grandparent's toys. They are learning about first person accounts and interviews. We are reading lots of wonderful books. Please check our book shelf.
January 3-6 We will complete our Holidays Around the World unit by learning how the New Year is celebrated around the world. We will also learn how Kwanzaa is celebrated in the USA and will continue to learn about both western and eastern Africa and Porto Rico.
December 1- 23 Our second grade classes are learning about how winter holidays are celebrated in many different cultures. We will be reading lots of stories, cooking tasty foods and making interesting crafts throughout the month of December. Please join us for an International Holiday Party on December 22nd at 2:30.
November 21 - 30 The children are learning about the Pilgrims of 1620, Thanksgiving and the Native American friends who helped them. They are reading about the Mayflower voyage the Wampanog Nation and Plimouth Plantation. They are also learning about the unique and amazing characteristics of birds of prey. We are learning to read non-fiction books well. Children are using many sources to write about owls. November 14- 18 Our class will be learning about the celebration of Veteran's Day. The children will be learning about the sacrifice of military families today and long ago. They will also be learning patriotic songs and poems. They will be performing " God Bless America" in song and sign in the Veteran's Day Assembly at 2:00pm on November 10th.
November 7-11 We are learning about citizenship and voting this week. We are reading lots of fun books about voting along with those of a more important nature. Our Second Grade Classes will be voting on the most popular Beanie Baby on Election Day. October 24 -31 Our class will be busy practicing our parts for the Halloween Revue. We are investigating the interesting and unique features of pumpkins and spiders.
October 17-21 We are exploring trees and leaves in and around Genet School. Children are identifying trees based on their bark and leaves. The children enjoy reading books about fall and seasonal changes. They can't say enough about how much their trees at home and at school mean to them.
October 12 - 16 We are having a great time learning about the explorer Christopher Columbus. They are learning rhymes and chants to help them remember important historical dates. October 10-14
Our class will spend the week reading books and learning poems,chants, songs and rhymes to help us remember important fire safety rules. We have practiced lots of fire drills at school. We will meet the East Greenbush Firefighters later in the month. Don't forget to practice fire drills at home, choose a meeting spot, check your smoke alarm batteries and always be prepared. October 3 - 7 An Apple a Day! We are celebrating the gift of apple trees in story, science and song this week. We are also opening our non-fiction book shelves. We will recognize Johnny Appleseed's birthday by baking apple pies. September 19 - 23 Love Your Classroom Library ! We are learning how to enjoy all our classroom books. There is a place for each precious book. We have opened our chapter book shelves, favorite characters, song books, big books, listening center, computer center and poetry place. We are learning about "just right books". September 12-16 Constitution Week ! We are learning about the laws of our land and our classroom. The delegates from each table are writing the constitution which will guide us this school year. We are reading about friendship and peace. We are learning about "Bucket Filling" and kindness. September 6-9
We are busy learning about our classroom, room 28 and getting to know our new friends in Second Grade. The children are reading rhymes, favorite stories, poetry and songs. They are learning about Reading and Writing Workshop.
June 20 - 23 We are finally at Camp ! Four days of field experiences, camp fires, songs, snacks, stories, summer safety, games and crafts. Campers will be in their new groups every afternoon. We hope to see you at many of our events, pizza party, field day and our picnic. Check our Parent Page for dates and times.
June 13- June 17 We are working hard on illustrating and performing our poems in Writing Workshop. Children are editing and rehearsing. Everyone else is typing and encouraging. The children are reading up a storm and finishing their math book. Everyone is doing extra credit assignments. The tadpoles have legs!
June 6-10 We are reading and writing about sports and sportsmanship this week in class. We are celebrating Field Day with track and field events on Tuesday. We hope to see you there. May 30 - June 3 The children continue to observe the life cycle of the tadpoles and sunflowers in our classroom. They are also busy counting money, telling time and measuring everything including the sunflower plants.
May 23 - 27 The children have learn a bit about military service, and citizenship. We loved our trip to the USS Slater and are hopeful that the volunteers can keep her afloat.
May 16-20 The children have learned to identify many North American song birds. We are observing the birds from the classroom. May 9 - 13 We are learning all about wetlands. The children are working hard on vocabulary for science. They are observing our fish and tadpoles more closely. They know lots about animal life cycles. May 3 - 7 We are reading and writing up a storm about our Moms. There are many charming books about moms in our classroom. Check our book list at the top right of this site. April 25-29 Our nature museum is growing by leaps and bounds. The children are writing up a poetry storm about weather and nature. They are also polishing up their listening and public speaking skills. April 11- 15 We are still busy in Reading Workshop with our favorite Fairy Tales. There are so many to choose from. The children are also enjoying fractured Fairy Tales like the Three Little Wolves and the Big, Bad Pig.
April 4-8 We are reading and noticing common elements in Fairy Tales. The children are happily making charts and maps of their favorite fairy tales. They especially like reading with lots of voice.
March 28 - April 1 We are having a great time learning about the the life and times of George Washington. The children are very interested in his early life, his mother, his pets and his teeth.
March 21- 25 It's all about the weather in room 174. The children are reading up a storm. They are enjoying making their own weather instruments.
March 14- 18 We are as busy as leprechauns learning about the giants, fairies and wee folk of Ireland. The children have been busy trying to catch leprechauns and good books. Alas we were not successful at catching the leprechauns but they did leave a platter of delicious cookies, fancy Irish pencils and green beads. March 7 - March 11 We are having a great time learning about the food pyramid and healthy food choices. We are reading some very funny books about not so healthy food choices. January 24 -28 We are just beginning our exploration of space. The children are excited to have new non-fiction books to read for this unit. Thomas B. has generously brought in books from his recent trip to NASA.
