Red Ribbon Week Red Ribbon Week

Riverside was 1 of 2 schools in Lackawanna County that was asked to participate in a Red Ribbon campaign project at the Lackawanna County Courthouse on October 19, 2007. Five students helped decorate the square with red ribbons. Check out the slide show on the main page for some pictures.

Riverside SADD participates in National Red Ribbon Week from October 23-31.

Red Ribbon Week is conducted in honor of a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent, Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was kidnapped and brutally killed in Mexico in February 1985.  Agent Camarena had uncovered a multi-billion dollar drug scam involving Mexican government & law enforcement officials.  He was kidnapped, tortured, and beaten to death.  In 1988, the U.S. congress proclaimed the last full week of October Red Ribbon Week in honor of Agent Camarena and the cause he gave his life for - combating drugs.

The purpose of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a visible commitment to a safe, healthy and drug-free lifestyle. The campaign is designed to accomplish the following:

  • to create awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
  • to support the decision to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

SADD chapters are encouraged to celebrate Red Ribbon Week to symbolize their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and to create awareness of the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
