2006-2007 International Women's Day International Women's Day - VOICES

We are ladies, hear us roar!

In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8, 2007, fifteen 7th and 8th grade female students participated in an interactive video conference at the University of Scranton.  The University of Scranton in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania organized the videoconference which was sponsored by MAGPI and the Pennsylvania Commission for Women.

Four women featured in the book VOICES (published by the Pennsylvania Commission for Women) were assigned to be mentors/role models for the day to groups of female 7th & 8th grade students across Pennsylvania.  They talked about the importance of following your dreams to become independent successful Americans regardless of gender, ethnicity, or race.  Our female role model for the day was Ms. Joyce Avila.

As host to Riverside Jr/Sr High School, the University of Scranton provided the girls with an opportunity to get to know Ms. Avila during lunch prior to the videoconference.   During the videoconference, students were given the opportunity to question the panel of women in round robin style.  It was an experience none of us will soon forget.

The girls did an outstanding job and represented Riverside well.  Our only regret was that it was over so quickly!  We look forward to participating in future endeavors.

Participants can click here to participate in the blog that has been set up as part of the program.  All blog entries are subject to approval.  In order to be approved, you must include your 1st name and school.

Watch the slide show to see some pictures of the girls in action.
