Reading Book Goal: New York state standards state that students should read at least 25 books during the school year.  In an attempt to help each child accomplish this goal, I am requiring each student to read four books every report card quarter.  The due dates for each book goal are listed below.  Students will be required to complete a book review for each book that they read.  All books should be on reading and age level.  Books should be a minimum of 150-200 pages.  Longer books may count as more than one book for the goals.  You may complete a book review on any books that you read over the summer and count them towards your book goal.  If you are unsure about a book, bring it in and let me look at it.  Progress of their book goal will be kept on a chart in the class and in power school.  An outline for the book reviews will be distributed.  I will treat all students that achieve the book goal to a pizza party at the end of the year.

Goal 1 due: September 14th    5 books complete

Goal 2 due: October 28th         10 books complete

Goal 3 due: February 1st          15 books complete

Goal 4 due: April 15th 20 books complete

Goal 5 due: June 11th 25 books complete

**Students should always have a book with them to read.  If class work is finished early they will be given extra reading time.  We will be reading novels in class in addition to the text stories.  Periodically I will require students to buy a book from Scholastic or they will have to obtain the book on their own from a store or the library.

*** Students should be reading at least 30 minutes daily outside of class.

Graphic novels may be used toward the book goal but the following rules apply.

1) Two graphic novels = one book, for the goal.

2) You may only count 2 graphic novels toward each book goal.  In other words for each goal listed above, you must read 4 books and you may read two graphic novels in place of one book.
