Third Grade Book Club October 14th- October 17th- Story Elements - Setting- When and where the story takes place. A story can take place in the past, present or future. A story can EVEN take place in an imaginary world where time hardly seems to exist!
- Characters- The characters are who the story is about. Characters can be made-up people or real people in a make-believe world. Characters may even be animals!
- Plot- The plot is what happens in the story. The plot is made up of the events in the story. As the events take place, the characters try to solve the main problem in the story. When you read, try to think about the most important events in the plot!
- Theme- The theme is the message or lesson of the story. Some stories have more than one theme. The theme helps us understand how other people feel or act.
Discussion Questions for Eggy’s Easy Out 1. After reading, we learned that Eggy “blacked out”. What words or sentences help you understand what it means to black out? (Key Idea: Determining the meaning of unfamiliar words by using context clues…) 2. On page 8 the author told us that the pitcher threw a fastball. On page 9 the author told us that Eggy sneezed while trying to catch the ball. Which detail was more important to the story? (Key Idea: Evaluating the content by identifying important and unimportant details) Discussion Questions for Journey Across The Desert - Ali going on his very first caravan. He feels both excited and nervous. Explain why he feels both of these feelings. Share the page that helped you understand this.
(Key Idea: Making predictions, drawing conclusions and making inferences about events and characters.) - Ali says on page 13, “Or are my eyes playing tricks on me again?”. What does he mean when he says that? Why doesn't he trust his eyes when he believes he sees the city of Timbuktu?
(Key Idea: Determining the meaning if unfamiliar words or ideas by using context clues...) - This book Ali had to wait until he was old enough to join his father on the caravan. What did Ali do when he was younger to help prepare for the caravan? Why was it important for him to wait until THIS birthday to join his father and the others?
(Key Idea: Identifying a conclusion that summarizes the main idea)
