December 2, 2008 I hope everyone had a pleasant break! Now the countdown has begun to the Christmas holidays -- 14 days to go. I cannot believe how quickly this year has passed! This week we're working on chapter 16 - China, Mongolia, and Taiwan. Students are watching a series of three short videos in class to introduce them to China. They will have a vocabulary activity for homework on Wednesday and we will begin reading 16.1 in class on Thursday. We will have an open-book quiz on Friday over the sections in chapter 16 that we have covered up until that day. November 17, 2008 This week we're working on a travel guide that will be due on Tuesday, November 25. I have put the instructions and rubric on the left side. This is to be done in class and we will have checks daily to make sure everyone is keeping up. We'll also be having a geography test on Tuesday, November 25. I have posted the countries to the left, along with a completed and blank outline map. Students must be able to identify the locations of the countries on an outline map of Asia. November 11, 2008 The test over chapter 14 has been moved to Thursday. Students were given a study guide today. This study guide is not for a grade but will be extremely helpful! I have put a copy of it on this site -- go to the main page and click "Worksheets." We'll be finishing up 14.3 today/tomorrow and playing a review game. Have a great day! P.S. -- THE REVIEW POWER POINT IS POSTED TO THE LEFT UNDER "POWER POINTS." November 7, 2008 This coming week will we be finishing up chapter 14 – India. We’ll be having a test over it on Wednesday. We’ll then continue on to chapter 15 – India’s neighbors. It’s important that students are familiar with the text and vocabulary words. Students also need to know the locations of these countries on a world map. They should also continue to review the locations of the Middle East/Arabian Peninsula. I will be giving a geography test sometime in the next two weeks over all the locations we’ve covered so far. As time gets closer I’ll update you by newsletter and my website. Have a great weekend! (And don’t forget to buy your yearbook!!!) October 30, 2008 We finally finished the Middle East/Arabian Peninsula. Now we're moving on to Southern and Eastern Asia -- China, India, Indonesia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Vietnam, and their neighbors. We will be working on these units until January! In our texts these units comprise chapters 14 through 18. We'll begin reading chapter 14 on Monday. I still encourage students to practice the for the CRCT by going to StudyIsland.com. Have a great Halloween and weekend! October 23, 2008 Tomorrow we'll be finishing chapter 6 and working on an Iran/Iraq map assignment. The test will be Wednesday, October 29. The test will be over all of chapter 6 and over the types of governments that they were quizzed on yesterday. Students will receive a study guide on Monday, but it will be up to them to work independently to complete it correctly. ANOTHER GREAT CRCT PREPARATION TOOL, besides StudyIsland.com (see below), is the Georgia DOE's CRCT preparation site found here: http://gadoe.org/ci_testing.aspx?folderID=14730&m=links&ft=Student%20Guides I am also placing the link in my "Great Links" to the left. October 16, 2008 We’re still working on the Middle East for this coming week. On Tuesday, students will have a quiz over the Middle Eastern governments handout. They must be able to identify the characteristics of each type of government and also be able to identify what types of government the Middle Eastern countries have. Students made flash cards in class. They should review these flash cards each day so they’ll be prepared for the quiz. Another good way to study is to go onto StudyIsland.com and take the Middle Eastern Governments quiz! We will have a test over chapter 6 on either October 28th or the 29th. I’ll let the students know for sure as the time draws closer. October 10, 2008 We are still working on the Middle East -- chapter 6. The students have a worksheet packet that is due on Monday, 10/13. This worksheet packet will be the final grade of the nine weeks. We have a new study tool to help prepare for the CRCT and every student will have access! This is a great tool for learning and fun too! Here are the instructions on how to access the site: Instructions for logging in to STUDYISLAND.COM Students Usernames are firstname.lastname@lakeside and their password is their 5 digit student ID which they should all know. Username = john.doe@lakeside Password = 12345 I encourage each student to use the site and we will be using it in class too. I have created a few "assignments" that will show up when you log on. Feel free to try them, although these grades won't count just yet. Have a great week! --------------------------------------------------------- October 6, 2008 Hi! First I need to remind everyone about our field trip to the Augusta Canal on Wednesday. Buses will be leaving the school at 9:00 a.m. Don't forget your lunch unless you signed up for a bag lunch from the lunchroom! This week we'll be working on Chapter 6 continuing our studies of the Middle East. We'll have a worksheet packet to complete and will be making a flip book. Students began a map activity today which will count for a quiz grade. September 29, 2008 The Chapter 5 test has been moved from Tuesday, 9/30 to Thursday, 10/2. We will review on Wednesday. Students should review his or her study guide nightly so they won't have to cram the night before. (STUDENTS WILL ALSO HAVE A MATH TEST ON THURSDAY!) This is a lot of information and it would be impossible to learn it all in one night! I'll post a study guide online also, probably tomorrow. :) September 22, 2008 We are beginning Chapter 5 this week -- Eastern Mediterranean/Modern Middle East. Students will be given a study guide to use throughout the chapter. They must be familiar with locations, vocabulary, and history of the area. This is a lot of information, but the study guide should help a bunch. I will also be posting some Power Points that will assist the students while studying. There will be some classwork assigned, along with open book/notes assignments that will be considered quizzes and will count as quiz grades. The chapter test will not be open-book and is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 30. I'll let everyone know if this changes. Even though I do not bombard my students with homework, I encourage each student to take his or her textbook home every night and be familiar with the material. Students that familiarize themselves with the content always do well on the quizzes and tests. Knowledge of world history is not something that we're all born with, so we must READ, do our assignments, be responsible, and pay attention in class!!! Hello! We have been reading chapter 4, sections 1, 2, & 3. We'll be having a test over this chapter on Tuesday. Please make sure your student reads the whole chapter and is familiar with ALL the content. I'm still working with students to get their incomplete work finished. It's coming along slowly but surely. Thank you for your patience! :) September 3, 2008 Greetings, parents! Thank you for your patience while I transition from 8th grade Language Arts to 7th grade Social Studies! Yes, there are several students with zeros showing, and yes, I will work with those students to get those assignments completed. Also, any students with a failing grade will have plenty of opportunities to pull it up. I will work with your student! It may take a couple of weeks, but we'll get it done. Again, thank you so much for your patience!!! Here are my grading weights: Tests -- 35% Homework/Classwork -- 20% Quizzes -- 25% Exams -- 20% More to come -- please check back! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ August 26, 2008 GRAMMAR: Pronouns quiz tomorrow! Students have been given review sheets. Material can be found in the Writing & Grammar Handbook, pages 200 -207. Students must be able to identify pronouns, antecedents, and be able to identify whether a pronoun is interrogative, demonstrative, relative, or indefinite. LITERATURE: We are working on Raymond's Run, page 288. Students need to be familiar with idioms. We will start A Tell-Tale Heart, page 522, on Wednesday or Thursday, 8/27 or 8/28. Any questions? Please feel free to e-mail me! stephanie.lipecky@ccboe.net ----------------------------------------------- Greetings all! I have updated the calendar with Language Arts assignments. Please check the "What's Going On" tab to the left often! There will be a test on this Friday, August 22, over A Retrieved Reformation (p. 242 in lit book) and Ransom of Red Chief. Ransom of Red Chief is not in any of our text books, but you may access it by clicking here! Additionally, students will be tested over vocabulary and lit terms. These can be found to the left under "Vocabulary" and "Literary Terms."
