"Intelligence plus character– that is the true goal of education.” MLK

      Here at Washington Elementary, our character education program is “Character Counts!”  It contains six pillars/traits designed for the purpose of positively impacting the behavior and academic success of each student by creating a caring learning environment that develops successful students and good citizens.

Six Pillars of Character

Respect

*Follow the Golden Rule!

*Be tolerant of differences. 

*Use manners.

*No put downs.

*Be considerate.

*Don’t threaten, hurt /hit anyone.

*Deal peaceful w/anger/insults.


Trustworthiness

*Be honest .

*Don’t deceive, cheat, or steal. 

*Be reliable.

*Be loyal.

*Build a good reputation.

*Have the courage to do the right thing.

      

Citizenship

*Be kind.

*Show you care.

*Be compassionate.

*Express gratitude.

*Forgive others.

*Help people in need.

*Put others first.


Responsibility

*Do what you are supposed to do.

*Persevere-keep trying! 

*Use self-control.

*Think before you act . 

*Be accountable for your choices

Citizenship

*Do your share to make your school better.

Age–appropriate guidance lessons designed to cover these traits are  taught and
delivered by the school counselor into the classrooms . We  incorporate Character ED into TRIBES with a focus on one trait each month and praise students who demonstrate outstanding character with positive reinforcers such as rewards, beads, pizza coupons , certificates and public recognition.

TRIBES–

A program that builds a community of learners within the classroom.

Students follow 5 basic rules/agreements:

1. Attentive listening

2. Mutual Respect

3. Appreciation

4. No put downs

5. Right to pass
