Healthy School

As most of you are probably aware, there is an initiative nationwide gaining a lot of attention. It is health and wellness in our schools. Here at Peters Elementary School, we are equally concerned about the well-being of our students and want to do all we can to promote healthy choices for them. Beginning three years ago with the Governor's Fitness Challenge, we were proud to be able to give our students additional opportunities for exercise during the school day. Since then, those fitness opportunities have continued. In addition, we will be trying to incorporate healthy food and drink choices for the children. *Students will be allowed to have water bottles in school to drink as they need it. Being well-hydrated is very important! If you do not send water, your child will still be able to have periodic drink breaks during the day. *We are also hoping to keep foods served at classroom parties and birthday celebrations healthier. I will give some information at the beginning of the year with some suggested healthy food choices for these events. One option for birthdays will be birthday baskets that can be purchased from the school's Food Services. They will be filled with healthy treats for the class and delivered to their classroom. This could be a nice alternative to cupcakes and other sweets that can also be difficult for a child to transport. We know that children love sweets, and sometimes they are fine. But we also feel that if the sweets are saved mostly for at home, parents can decide how and when these types of foods are eaten. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this positive initiative at Peters Elementary School!
