Garden Project » Spring 2007 This was our first attempt at creating a small garden on campus! The 7th graders are scheduled to study plants in the spring, and so this year they created this wonderful garden from scratch. The area started out barren and had only crushed rock on top of plastic. The students planned it out, removed the rocks, tilled the soil with hand tools, added compost and mulch, planted a combination of seeds and potted vegetables, and then followed daily and weekly care schedules. No fertilizers or chemicals were used in the soil or on the plants. Only coffee grounds and left-over lunch food items like apple cores and banana peels were tossed into the garden. There were so many tomatoes that we lost count! Plus there were a couple large squash, corn, sun flowers, radishes, mini-carrots, herbs, and some melons. I wish I had taken some "before" pictures!
