GRADE 6 CURRICULUM

RELIGION   We study the Old and New Testaments, using the Bible as our  primary source in conjunction with our updated textbook “Blest Are We”.  Our school theme encouraging care of the Earth and all of Creation is integrated into liturgies and daily living.  A variety of service projects enhances the course of study.  We encourage students to accept the challenge of practicing and developing their faith as young adult Christians.

**We familiarize ourselves with major themes and figures in the Bible, linking Old Testament themes with our Social Studies curriculum.

READING   We use a reading textbook and skills workbook, as well as a variety of trade books and selected skills to enhance comprehension and higher level thinking.  Students will participate in DEAR (Drop Everything and Read), Scholastic Reading Counts and assigned book reports.  We encourage strong independent reading skills and interest in a variety of literary genres. Students should always be prepared with an independent reading book.

**We work continuously on comprehension skills/strategies and application of language mechanics to written assignments.  Literature/Movie Report is in progress.

MATHEMATICS  The course of study offers students an opportunity to learn and practice important concepts, building on basic skills and developing an understanding of higher level processes.  It is our goal to increase students’ knowledge  and confidence level, to enable them to apply their skills to everyday situations.  Support is available to all students.  Topics of study include four operations with whole numbers, decimals and fractions, as well as percent, data interpretation, logic and introduction to algebra and geometry.

**We study four operations with whole numbers/decimals/fractions, and integrate important problem-solving strategies.   Our March Math~Ness Fair reinforces concepts of measurement and applied Math skills.

SOCIAL STUDIES  We study ancient civilizations, focusing on Egypt, Greece, Rome, Renaissance and Eastern cultures, as they developed and influence our modern-day society.  Material will be approached from a geographical and historical perspective.  We gain an appreciation for people of different cultures/heritages/faiths while recognizing and affirming our own American values.

**We review basic concepts of Geography as related to the Eastern Hemisphere, specifically recent European History and the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome.  Our Memorial Art Gallery Tour and Ancient Cultures projects brought our studies to life for us!
