Handwriting

Producing legible handwriting involves many skills, including fine motor, visual motor, sensory, language. Difficulties in any of these areas may result in writing, whether manuscript or cursive, that is not automatic and flowing. Often children learn bad habits, including pencil grasp and letter formation, at a very young age (preschool), and then carry those habits into their school years. These habits are very difficult to break, so it is best to have the skills learned correctly and consistently, at an age that is developmentally appropriate. Correct grasp and letter formation can be achieved through many fun activities, and without ever picking up a pencil (see Fine/Visual Motor).
