 Homework Tips for Parents

  • Establish rules for completion of homework.
  • Check your child's homework sheet or agenda with them.  This is their responsibility.
  • Make sure the child has a quiet/well lighted area to complete their homework.  Preferably the same place every day.
  • Make sure your child has the necessary supplies to complete the assignment.
  • Establish a time that homework will be completed.  You have to determine if your child works best right after school,  before dinner, after dinner etc..
  • Reduce distractions.
  • Encourage your child to ask for help.
  • Be in the vicinity of your child while they are completing their homework.  You do not have to sit next to them the entire time.
  • Keep track of how long (on task) it is taking your child to complete the assignment.  If it is taking too long or appears too difficult notify the teacher.
  • Help your child study for tests/quizzes.
  • IF your child refuses to complete their homework let the natural consequences occur in school the next day.
  • Verbally praise your child!  Tell them great job, thanks for being responsible, high five-you do not need to praise them with toys or food.
