 Teeth  Facts  to Know

1. Primary Teeth is the real name for "Baby Teeth".

2. Permanent Teeth is the real name for "Adult Teeth".

3. Primary teeth are our practice teeth.  We learn how to brush, floss, and take good care of our teeth before our permanent teeth come down (or up!).

4. Children have 20 primary teeth.

5. Adults have 32 permanent teeth.

6. Three types of teeth to know:

Incisors bite and cut food.

Cuspids bite and tear food.

Molars grind and chew food.

7.Teeth can not taste food. Taste buds on our tongue taste the food in our mouths.

8. To have healthy teeth you must brush and  floss them every day.

9. Animals and people have teeth to help them chew food.

10. Some nonliving things have teeth too. Examples are a saw, gears, and a comb.

11. Tooth parts to know:

Crown - the visible part of a tooth.

Dentin - the hard but porous tissue located under the enamel. Dentin is harder than bone.

Enamel - the tough, shiny, white outer surface of the tooth.

Gums - the soft tissue that surrounds the base of the teeth.

Pulp - the soft center of the tooth. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves; it nourishes the dentin.

Root - the part of a tooth that you can not see. It holds the tooth in place.

*Note that we will not learn the name of all of the parts of the tooth to the left in first grade.  Just the parts that are named above.
