Below is a list of expectations for the First Nine Weeks of school. I know that it looks like a lot, but I believe that our children can and will accomplish all of this and more!
Writing/Grammar:
*Student’s abilities are assessed (handwriting, sentence structure, and creative writing).
*Students are able to print first and last name.
*Students will begin to use grammar skills taught.
*Students are able to print daily work legibly.
*Students will print letters in daily work using taught letters correctly.
*Students will write a minimum of one sentences in their writing folder working toward two sentences by end of first nine weeks.
*Students are able to write a complete sentence.
*Students begin putting a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence.
*Students begin putting punctuation at the end of the sentence.
*Students begin journaling; expressing thoughts in written form.
*Students will begin to use a variety of writing forms to include but not limited to lists, letters, stories, and poems.
*Students will use the grammar rules as they are taught in class. Expectation is once a rule is taught student will use it in his/her daily writing.
Reading/Language Arts:
*Student’s abilities are assessed (sight words, letters, letter sounds, letter blending, etc…).
*Students use long and short vowels.
*Students identify parts of a book.
*Students identify before/after.
*Students listen and follow directions.
*Students identify rhyming words/sounds.
*Students identify and read sight words.
*Students will demonstrate mastery of letter recognition.
*Students will use sound/symbol relationships.
*Students begin reading text - as assessed for individual abilities.
*Students will begin to take AR tests - first with adult monitoring and then independently.
*Students begin taking spelling tests. Spelling words are expected to be spelled correctly. Backwards letters, capitalization, and spacing errors will not lose points during the first nine weeks.
*On the spelling test challenge words earn bonus points. To earn bonus points challenge words must have everything correct. This means no backwards letters, capital and lowercase letters used correctly, apostrophes used correctly.
*Students will complete a weekly reading log of a minmum of 40 minutes of reading per week. Reading logs will be graded weekly.
*By end of the First Nine Weeks students will take weekly AR test on a story read in class. This is the weekly story from the reading book that is read and discussed in class in both whole group and small groups.
Mathematics:
*Student's abilities are assessed (number recognition, pattern making, addition and subtraction understanding)
*Students will reproduce repeating patterns.
*Students will add and subtract facts to ten.
*Students will rote counting to 100.
*Students begin identifying days of the week, months of the year, number words, and color words.
*Students begin making and reading a simple graphs.
*Students will organize data using tally marks.
Work Habits
*During the first nine weeks most, but not all, classwork will be completed with the use of an overhead.
*Students will follow directions being read aloud working toward reading directions on worksheets independently.
*Directions will be given before students work with reminders as students work. Students are expected to listen and follow directions.
*Students will work independently, with partners, small groups, and whole group activities.
