Ecosystems

In Science we learned about ecosystems and the importance of a healthy ecosystem in maintaining the balance of all of it's living and non-living organisms which includes us.  After discussing and learning about different eco-systems, every student created a model ecosystem using three 2-liter bottles.   The top half acted as an aquarium that contained green plants like elodea, and duckweed and microorganisms like algae.  The aquariums were also habitats for Mosquito fish (Gambusia) and snails.  The top half contained a terrarium in which we grew alfalfa, rye (grass), and mustard plants in soil and composted leaves.  The two ecosystems were then joined together to form a self-sustaining ecosystem.  To wrap up our project we created eco-system PowerPoint projects.
