Language, faith -- and 'Indian Idol' at Parsippany High

BY JAKE REMALY
DAILY RECORD

PARSIPPANY -- About 600 people attended the Shri Sanatan Mandir Sunday School's annual Asian Indian culture exhibition in the Parsippany High School auditorium on Sunday.

The ceremony ran from 1:30 until about 6:30 p.m. and featured dancing, quiz shows and language demonstrations from the Sunday school's 200 students.

"It's a culmination of what they learned in the year and showcasing the Indian culture," said Monisha Khadse, a spokeswoman for the school, which started in 1992 with 13 students.

Shri Sanatan Mandir is a Hindu temple in Parsippany.

Most of the school's students were born in the United States, Khadse said. Classes are held at Eastlake Elementary School, and the coursework can fulfill the foreign-language requirement for high school students in Morristown and Parsippany school districts, she said.

Start with prayer

Classes start with prayer, then instruction in the Hindi and Gujarati languages, followed by culture lessons. Optional dancing and music lessons follow, Khadse said.

The show featured bright banners and costumes, a dance competition, music, on-stage quiz shows, and "Indian Idol."
