Mr. S. and teachers from the US and Canada that were on the trip atop the Pyramid of the Sun.

While in Mexico this past February I had the honor of traveling with Mrs. Mary Rowan and Mrs. Jane Leach.  Mrs. Rowan teaches 2nd grade at Hardyston School in Sussex County and Mrs. Leach is a retired former teacher from Hardyston School who now lives in North Carolina.  I first met Mrs. Rowan at a Monarch Teacher Network workshop in August 2007 and I could see in her face that she was as passionate as I am not only about Monarchs but also about Mexico.  I'll never forget Mrs. Rowan telling me at the end of the workshop that she was going to Mexico and she did.  It turns out that her grandparents moved from Mexico many years ago and her grandfather who used to work in the gold and silver mines in Mexico moved to Sussex County and eventually got a job working at the Sterling Mine in Ogdensburg.  Though her grandfather has since passed she retains and is extremely proud of her Mexican heritage.  I'll never forget Mrs. Rowan mixing dough for the quesadillas in the El Rosario Monarch Sanctuary and our visit with a woman who raises her grandchildren in the Purepecha village of Santa Fe, which overlooks Lake Patzcuaro.  A lot of tears were shed before, during and after that visit as we walked the mile or so back to our bus from our visit to la Escuela Primeria Miguel Hidalgo.

On Friday April 5th the New Jersey Herald newspaper printed a wonderful story about Mrs. Rowan's and Mrs. Leach's trip along with pictures.  The article rings back so many memories of Mexico, the Monarchs and the people there, that I felt that I have to share the article here.  Please enjoy!
