This past summer Mr. Szuszkowski met Senora Magdalena Veran at a Monarch Teacher Network Workshop.  Senora Veran is a 5th grade teacher in Lima, Peru who was visiting the United States to learn about the migration of the North American Monarch butterflies.  Senora Veran also raises Monarchs with her students at the Leonardo Da Vinci school in Lima, Peru.  The students at the bi-lingual Da Vinci school from an early age learn not only Spanish but also learn English.

The Monarchs in the South American country of Peru are distant relatives of the North American Monarchs, they look the same, use the same milkweed as their host plants and they migrate during the Peruvian winter, although they migrate within the country of Peru, where they leave the coastal areas that border the southern Pacific Ocean and they migrate into the foothills of the Andes Mountains of Peru.  After having had the opportunity to meet Senora Veran and spend a couple of days talking we decided to exchange class mascots.  Senora Veran sent us Leo the Llama and we in exchange are sending Rocky the New York Giants Bear.  Every student in our class is going to have the opportunity to take Leo home for 2 days to take pictures with him, introduce Leo to their families and take him shopping, to basketball games, football games, out to dinner and show him around the great state of New Jersey.  When Leo goes home with a student he also takes a USB flash drive with him so when the students takes pictures with him they can save their pictures to the flash drive and bring them in for us to upload to our website.  We welcome the students in Lima to our site and hope that you check back often to check on Leo's travels.
