Science and Social Studies Science and Social Studies

Welcome to Science and Social Studies!

Science and Social Studies are alternated by 9 week periods with some overlap.  We begin the year with Social Studies learning about Friendship and Respect.  Our science and social studies lessons are very hands on to encourage exploration and reasoning therefore, occasionally, we will ask the students to bring in supplies or materials to help us with our lessons.

There may also be occasional homework assignments depending on the unit. Please keep an eye out in your child's blue communication folder for updates on our current needs.

Friendship/Character Education - The importance of tolerance and kindness are taught while the children are working together to discover ways to be helpful and nice to one another.

Matter - Solids, Liquids & Gasses - There are 3 hands on sub-units where children will participate in experiments pertaining to solids, liquids and gasses. They will learn the properties of each and how they change from one to another.

Colonial Times/Native Americans - The children will learn the history of the people of our country and have an opportunity to make some of the art of the time.

My America:  National Monuments, American Symbols - We will go on a tour of the U.S.!! We will learn about the Pledge of Allegiance, the American Flag, our money, the Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and many others!  Students will create a class American flag and pledge to hang up in our room!

Holidays Around the World - During this fun time of year, we will look at how others around the world celebrate.

Space - The children will learn about our solar system, the moon and the sun.  Hands on activities and experiments allow the children to see how our earth rotates and how the moon and sun orbit around the earth.

The Life Cycle: Plants and Animals In this hands on unit children plant seeds, observe and record their observations, and then compare and contrast their findings.

Ants:  In my class, children will observe an ant farm and become experts on ant colonies and how ants work together.  This will be during our life cycle unit.  Other classes may observe butterflies, ladybugs, praying mantis' or tadpoles.

Magnetism - The basics of magnetism and how magnets can be used as tools.  Students will perform experiments to compare and contrast the basic characteristics of magnets.

Sink and Float - Students will use experiments to compare and contrast the characteristics of things that sink and float.  They will sort their items and create both concrete and bar graphs of their information.

Earth Day / Recycling - We learn about Earth Day, recycling and how to be kind to the earth.  We usually plant plants or a tree, clean up our campus and record things we have done to help the planet.

Florida Unit - This unit is a hands on unit where children create their own map of Florida, learn to use a map key, symbols and a compass rose.  They will also label surrounding geography on their maps.
