The Daily 5 This year your child will be participating in the Daily Five. This literacy framework was designed by "The Sisters," Gail Boushey & Joan Moser. The Daily Five is a literacy framework that allows the children to be independently engaged in quality reading and writing activities while the teacher is free to work one-on-one and with small groups on focus lessons. - Work on Word Work.
The research behind the Daily Five (paraphrased from figure 1-2 pg. 11): - Read to Self: To become a better reader, you must read daily on your just right reading level.
- Read to Someone: Reading to someone helps you practice strategies, become more fluent and check for understanding.
- Listening to Reading: Listening to reading allows you to hear fluent reading and learn more words thus increasing your vocabulary.
- Working on Writing: To become a better writer, you must practice writing daily on topics that interest you.
- Work on Word Work: Correct spelling speeds up your ability to get your thoughts down on paper.
The Daily Five will be introduced slowly and systematically the first six weeks of school. Once the children are proficient in independently participating in the Daily Five without teacher intervention I will begin my individual and guided reading groups. The children will complete one Daily Five activity of their choosing followed up by a whole group mini lesson. This pattern repeats as long as time allows.
