Newletter for Sept. 21, 2009

--Math:  In math, we worked last week on adding and numbers in any order along with adding three numbers.  We will be finishing our Unit 2 and will have a test on Friday, Sept. 25th.  We will continue working with fact families, doubles, and doubles +1, and even and odd.  

--Science:  In science, we are studying the weather.  We have discussed how air changes weather.  We will be working on types of clouds and how air can effect weather.  We will be creating our own terrariums next week.  A small glass jar will be greatly appreciated.

--Reading Workshop:  In reading, the kids have learned that good readers make lots of connections to help them understand what they read better.  We are also working on finding the beginning, middle and the end of a story along with the story elements for Ruby the Copycat . 

--Writing Workshop:  We will be writing about our favorite thing that happened during our Ramadan break. 

--Spelling/Vocabulary:  We have begun our sound exploration, and are studying our first spelling pattern, the /th/ sound in the classroom.  We will be going through a poem and finding the different spellings for the sound /ay/ and will sort them based on those spellings.  On Thursdays, we take a pretest of words that follow that spelling pattern, and then Friday, we will make our spelling lists for next week.  Starting next Monday, your child will be bringing home a spelling journal where they will have to complete a spelling activity each night to help practice their words.  Their spelling test over their personal words will be next Friday, Sept. 25th.   If your child is interested in participating in the PISA spelling bee, please let me know.  They can choose words on the list for spelling test.  If not, part of the spelling words they can choose from will be the spelling words that they need to know by the end of 2nd grade.  There will be 25 words total.  10 will be the vocabulary words that we will be studying and 8 will follow spelling patterns that we are learning in class.

--PE days are Wednesdays and Fridays

--Please send your child a healthy snack each day.

--I keep it quite chilly in my room, so feel free to send in a light jacket with your child
