Welcome to 8th Grade U.S. History. It is an honor and a pleasure to be entrusted with the responsibility of being an educator to your sons and daughters.
Quotations:
The job of an educator is to teach students to see the vitality in themselves. Joseph Campbell
Whoso neglects learning in his youth, loses the past and is dead to the future. Euripides
Education...is a painful, continual and difficult work to be done in kindness, by watching, by warning,... by praise, but above all -- by example. John Ruskin We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not a single act, it is a habit. Aristotle Tell me, I will forget. Show me, I might remember. Involve me, I will learn. Chinese proverb Goals:
The goals for the students in my classes are designed to not only communicate knowledge and enhance learning, but to encourage the development of the individual.
The goals for my students are: • To acquire self discipline, responsibility and independence • To become true learners and critical thinkers • To acquire organizational skills • To demonstrate effective expression through writing, speech and project presentation • To enrich vocabulary • To learn to use advanced software and audio-visual technologies within project presentations • To acquire an understanding and appreciation of history as it relates to their lives and their future Grading system:
The upgraded version of Pinnacle Web (to be used for the 2008-2009 school year) offers in my opinion greater flexibility and equitability when assessing students using a point based system. As a result, I have transitioned from percentage based grading to point based grading. Below please find a table of categories and their point value. | Category | Point Value | | Tests | up to 100 points | | Quizzes | up to 40 points | | Homework | up to 30 points | | Class work | up to 20 points | | Special Projects | up to 50 points | | Project Presentation | up to 30 points | | Student Participation | up to 50 points |
Homework:
• Homework is listed on the board daily and remains there throughout the week. It is the student's responsibility to get the assignments off the board if they are absent.
• Students are reminded to write all assignments in their agenda books daily, and projects due dates are to be entered in the calendar.
• To increase student responsibility and independence, I will not accept late assignments.
