Classroom Behavior Policies Classroom Behavior Policies

It is expected that those in my classroom, as 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, are aware of standard classroom behavior:

Talking in class - Before speaking, students should raise their hands; while in the process of doing groupwork, conversation should be limited to subject-specific matter.  When classwork ends and direct instruction resumes, students should again begin to raise their hands to obtain permission to speak.

Preparedness for class - each student should have a writing utensil (preferably a pencil) and paper (preferably a cumulative class notebook).  Even though I may not reference the class textbook on a daily basis, because of its effectiveness as a source of student reference, I require each student to bring their textbook to class each day.  If any worksheets/handouts are distributed, I expect that students will bring them to class each day.  I recommend that each student keep a file for my class for all handouts, so that they can be retrieved during any class period for reference purposes.  Frequently, I allow handouts and notebooks to be used for reference while taking Quizes.  Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom to retrieve forgotten materials.  For further information, see "Grading Policy".

Physical contact - There should be NO physical contact between students in the classroom.

Eating/Drinking in class - unless previously agreed upon with me, given by me, or bought from me in a school fundraising sale, there is to be no food (including gum) or drinks in my classroom.

Seating - Students should sit in assigned seats (and remaining seated during the entire class period).

Breaking of any of the above rules will result first in a warning, and then in a detention.

In addition to the standard classroom behavior, RHS has several policies which will be strictly enforced in my classroom:

Purses - purses should be kept underneath desks.  If a student needs anything from a purse, it should be removed within the first few minutes after class has begun.  No student is allowed to rifle through a purse during classtime.  In an emergency situation, a student should notify me that it is necessary for them to access their purse.  Breaking this rule will result first in a warning, and then in a detention.

Cell phones - Cell phones are not allowed in classrooms.  If I SEE a cell phone (even if it is not in use), I will confiscate it and hand it in to the office.  If a cell phone accidentally goes off, I will allow the student to silence the phone and issue a warning.  The initial offense will go unpunished, and as long as it does not become habit, there will be no disciplinary action taken.

Late-to-class - I will keep a Late-to-Class Sign-In Sheet at the front of the classroom.  Once my door is closed at the beginning of the class period, any student entering the room must write both the date and their name on the sheet.  At day's end, I will record all "Tardies".
After two tardies, I will either call home or make note on the student's online progress report.
After three, I will give a detention
After four, another detention will be given.
After five, the student will receive a Wednesday detention.
After six, the student will receive another Wednesday detention, in addition to ISS
Beyond seven, each offense will result in an out-of-school suspension.
