Meet Mrs. Canter Meet the Teacher

I was born in Portsmouth Ohio. I went to school in Wheelersburg where I was in the high school band and was a majorette. I lived in Wheelersburg Ohio until I was 21. That is when I came to the great state of Texas!

After moving to Longview I was able to finish my education at the University of Texas at Tyler. I have a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and a Masters in Educational Administration. I am certified in the areas of : Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, English as a Second Language, and Educational Administration.

I have been married for 27 years to Bob, we have 3 children. Jacob is 15 and a

Sophomore this year. He plays football at Spring Hill. Zach is 18 and will be going to Kilgore College this year. He is in the Christian hard core band called Sleep Now Sivylla.. Our daughter, Sara is married to Nathan McKinley and is the mother of Caleb who will be 4 this fall.

I have taught at Spring Hill for 21 years. In that time I have taught Pre-Kindergarten, ESL (K-12) and Third Grade. This will be my first year at Longview and Doris Mc Queen. This will be an exciting year of learning and growing for me as well as the children I teach.

I love teaching !

My hobbies are:

  • Learning new things (This world is so big and so full of things to explore and learn about!),
  • playing with my grandson,
  • cake decorating,
  • kayaking, and
  • yoga and Longview Fitness Boot Camp (www.longviewfitness.com)
  • I also love to participate in activities at Winterfield UMC. My boys and I are active with the Global Ministries and The Russian Initiative of the United Methodist Church. We went to Tomsk Siberia over Christmas break last year. We worked with children in 5 Russian orphanages. We got to work in an orphanage for babies as well as a blind orphanage! It was a unique experience to bring the love and joy of Christmas to children who would other wise be without. Oh yes, and it was be about 40 below zero in Siberia in December! That did add another demention to the adventure! I hope to go back again!

My Favorites:

  • Children’s Book : The Tale of Despereaux (and many many more)
  • Food: hummm everything
  • Music: Praise and Worship & oldies
  • Animal: West Highland White Terrier
  • Experience: Being a Grammy! ( and seeing him be born)
  • Quotation:” Great leaders are not the ones who do the greatest things. Great leaders are the ones who cause people to go the greatest things.” Ronald Reagan 1975
  • "When children read for pleasure, when they they get 'hooked on books,' they acquire, involuntarily and without conscious effort, nearly all of the so-called 'language skills' many people are so concerned about.."

-Stephen Krashen,  The Power of Reading
