Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart Course: Chemistry Course Syllabus 2009-2010 Required Materials Texts: Conceptual Chemistry Understanding Our World of Atoms and Molecules by John Suchocki Binder: Students are expected to have a binder used only for this class. Assignments: Homework: This is assigned regularly. Late homework is not accepted. Class Participation: Since participation is vital to the learning process, a grade will be awarded at the end of each quarter for class participation. This grade will take into account the student's general conduct, effort, cooperation, preparedness, and participation in classroom discussions throughout the quarter. Evaluation: Each assignment will be given a point value based on its importance on the assignment. This is done because some homework assignments are more challenging than other assignments. All assignments will fall under distinct categories. These will be weighted as follows: Activities/Homework 15% Quizzes and Tests 60% Quarter Test 20% Participation 5% Classroom Policies Conduct: Students are expected to pay close attention to the teacher or other students who are participating in the class. Attendance and Make-Up Work: When a student misses a class for any reason, it is their responsibility to check with the teacher for any missing assignments/material. If a student misses a test of quiz, they should expect a more difficult version to be given them within one day of their return. Topic 1 Matter and Energy Topic 2 Properties of Matter Topic 3 Subatomic Particles Topic 4 Atomic Nucleus and Models Topic 5 Chemical Bonding and Molecular Shapes Topic 6 Intermolecular Forces Topic 7 Chemical Reactions Topic 8 Acids and Bases Topic 9 Oxidation and Reduction Topic 10 Organic Compounds Extra Help: Mrs. Brewer will be available for extra help during 9th period every day.
