5th Grade Beginning Band

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. I'm really excited about getting you started in beginning band. We will re-test and hand out instruments the first week. You will be given a music method book, other music and a folder. You must bring your instrument, music, folder, and  a pencil to class each day.

You are expected to take your instrument home on a regular basis.  When taking your instrument home you must take it home in an instrument case. 

Pass-off test(s) will be given for each lesson. Pass off tests are usually just a few measures long but must be played with no mistakes to pass-off. Students will be given several opportunites during class time to pass-off the tests but may come in before school (7:30) or stay after school to play pass-off tests.

Chair tests are given every couple of weeks. Chair tests will not be give one week before a performance. You may also challenge another student for his/her chair. Challenges will only be done on Fridays and challenges will not be heard two weeks before performances.   

If your instrument needs repair it will be sent to the repair shop on Mondays. It usually takes two weeks for the instrument to be fixed and returned. I will try to have a school instrument for you to use while your instrument is being repaired. The school will pay for normal repair (pads, corks, re-adjustments, re-sodering braces, etc.). However, you are responsible for paying for broken or lost mouthpieces, or  any repair, such as dents, caused by neglect or dropping instruments. 

In addition to the Christmas and Spring Concerts you will also compete at the Highland Park Band Festival in April. After the contest we will go eat and then go to Wonderland!

We will meet in the Elementary Music Room. I will meet you in your classroom and walk you to the music room.

As we enter the 4th week of school things are going well for the 5th Grade Beginning Band. All of the students have instruments and method books. We are using the Rhythm Master Book 1 this year. We will be getting new books for the students soon so that they can write in their book, keep track of their practice times, etc. We have not received the band folders yet. 

I am available for extra help every morning before school and every evening after school except for Fridays.
