Hello Everyone!

From time to time I am going to attempt to come in here and write a few thoughts.  We'll see how it goes.  I am not an expert blogger, so please bear with me.

Petrin's Pulse

1. Happy Holidays!

It has been very busy around 5th grade at SMI.  We have just started our 50 states project.  I hope all of your kids have given you my introduction letter and "time and action" plan for the project.  This will certainly keep all of them busy for the next few months.

I have also just sent home a letter with information regarding our plans for our Christmas celebration on the last day of school before break.  We have decided to do a small breakfast that morning in our class, and a grab bag and any other treats after lunch. Each student was randomly assigned a breakfast item to bring in to help contribute.  If your child has not given you this paper, please remind them you need to see it.

In closing, I hope you all have a restful, joyful and wonderful Christmas and New Year!

2. Thankful

There is so much to be thankful for as we approach Turkey Day!  I am particularly thankful for having a class that adjusted so easily and well to our new temporary classroom during our school renovations.  I am also thankful for your families and all that you do for your kids and SMI.  We are most recently thankful in 5th grade to be eating lunch in the lunch room and having gym back in our gym.  We are eagerly anticipating the move back to our "home" in room 113.  The school looks so great and I hope you all get a chance to come see it soon.  I would like to wish everyone a restful, enjoyable Thanksgiving.

3. 2 More Weeks!

Welcome to all of my incoming 5th graders!  I am super excited to meet and get to know all of you.  I hope you're ready to work hard and wrap up your last year in elementary school with a bang.  Yes Mom and Dad, if you haven't realized this yet, this is officially the last year of elementary school.  We will be working hard this year to transition your child into middle school with ease.  Soak up the freedom and sun of the remaining days of summer.  I will see you all September 7th!  :)

4. SNOW DAY!!!

We have had our first snow day!!!  It's just so exciting :)  Anytime we have a snow day, please know that assignments due dates and test dates all move to the next school day.  It sure is nice to have some unexpected days off during the next few long months of winter.  In other news, we would like to welcome Mary to our class.  We are very excited to have a new, friendly face with us each day.  Until next time, bundle up, stay warm and most importantly, WEAR YOUR PJ'S BACKWARDS!!!

6. Busy Busy

Welcome to November and cold temperatures!  We have been very busy in 5th grade.  We are wrapping up quarter one, and overall I am pleased.  Please keep in mind that the first quarter of fifth grade can be a big adjustment and some kids will struggle.  You have probably noticed a considerable change in the level of the work this year as well.  While it may be a challenge, it is preparing them for success in middle school.  I have been impressed with the abilities of this class so far.  They work efficiently and are interested in school!  That is fantastic!!!  Now let's start quarter two off with a bang!

7. September is almost gone?

I cannot believe September is almost gone and we'll be heading well into Fall.  My 5th graders have been steadily learning the ins and outs of 5th grade.  I think they would tell you it's more work and it takes more dedication, but that they are learning a lot of new things!  I was happy to meet so many of you at our "Meet the Teachers" night.  Looks like we had a great turn out overall for SMI.  Keep up the great work, parents! :)

8. First Week Back to School

I think the students and I have had a very successful first week of school.  I love my new class :)  They seem to be very nice kids and I have high hopes for them to leave 5th grade in June having learned A LOT!  Welcome to Jake and Lina who are new to SMI.  We are so very happy to have you!

9. Where has the summer gone???

Happy, sad, nervous, excited...these are probably some of the feelings all of the students are having right about now.  I know that this is how I feel!  While I am going to miss the class I had for the past two years, I am very excited for my incoming NEW fifth graders!!!  In just one week, we'll be in the swing of things.  Enjoy these last few remaining free days and know I look forward to getting to know all of you :)

10. Friday 5/14/10

Another half day for you lucky kids!  The teachers were pretty lucky too.  We all had a fantastic lunch given to us by our HSA.  It was so good and thank you to everyone involved.  I am quite excited about a widget I have added to my "good books" link.  Please check it out.  Hopefully it's useful to all of you readers.  Hope everyone enjoys their weekend. See you Monday!

11. 50 States

The 50 states/learning fair is coming next Thursday!  The 5th grade is looking like they are very excited.  I am looking forward to next week during class to have each student present their showboards to the class.  I learn something new each year!  Hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend.  The teachers will be here for a meeting while you have a day off tomorrow.  We think you kids are pretty lucky:)  Enjoy the wonderful warm weather and get some outside play in while you can!
