When is the best time for a child to begin study of a band instrument? Fourth grade is the ideal time. Students have completed the third grade recorder program at this time and it is when the majority of students begin instruction. It is possible for fifth and sixth graders to being an instrument too, however. Will the "pull out" lessons interefere with my child's academic progress? Our students are placed on a rotating schedule so they will not miss the same classes every week, (generally a nine or eleven week rotation). Studies have shown that students in "pull out" classes do as well or better than students who are not. For more information on this subject please read this article on Music and Academics. Do I have to rent an instrument? The majority of students must rent but there are a limited number of school-owned instruments available on a first-come, first-served basis. Instruments include the trombone, baritone, and tuba. Please e-mail Mr. Scott for particulars. Are the drums easier than other instruments? Like any other instrument, the drums require patience and ability. The percussion section is the heartbeat of the band. The easiest instrument for a child is the one that has the sound that he or she likes. Instrument demonstrations have been held in each class. Can my child be in both chorus and band? Band members can also be in Chorus, Dance Troupe, etc. My child has never read music before. Is this a problem? Each student will be taught how to read music from the beginning. The program is designed to teach music reading and physical performance at the same time. I'm not sure if my child can handle this. How will I know if this will work out? If your child does well in music class, enjoys music and performing and does well academically they will probably be successful. Home practice time, (between ten and twenty minutes per day) must be available in the student's schedule. Do any classes meet before or after school? No groups meet after school but our ensembles do meet before school. Please click on "Our Ensembles" on the main page for more information. Lessons are all given during the school day.
