MASS MEDIA STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECTS

Students will research the topic "Controversial Images in the Mass Media" in conjunction with their study of Images and Society. The effort involves using the internet to search applicable articles, synthesizing them into 3-5 page MLA format reports. Some recent examples of student research include violent television, film and music images and their impact on violence in society; recent increases in the number of film protagonists who smoke and its impact on teen perception of smoking; the portrayal of women in mainstream magazines and its impact on teenage girls' self-image; and similar thought provoking themes .

Mass Media students will also research the life of pioneer radio and television journalist Edward R. Murrow, whose stirring broadcasts from Europe foreshadowed America's involvement in World War II.

Our January project will involve researching the life of eccentric television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth, who first envisioned and later perfected the science behind electronic television. His discoveries were later pirated by and, for a brief time, credited to NBC radio and TV mogul David Sarnoff.

In our February silent film project, students research early film mogul D.W. Griffith and his epic silent film "The Birth of a Nation", for its abject use of racist themes in recounting a slanted story of the Civil War reconstruction era.

In April we will research the life of film icon Orson Welles, whose artfully inspired "Citizen Kane" remains the American Film Institute's number one all-time film.

There's always something going on in Mass Media, a junior/senior Language Arts elective for students who want to know more about the past, present and future of radio, television, newspapers, and film and how they mirror the society that consumes them. Come join us!
