It's December Already! New York State ELA Exam Coming Up

It's hard to believe that it's already December.  The months are just flying by.  You probably already know this, but all NYS third graders must take standardized tests.  The ELA exam will be given on January 13 and 14.  You will be seeing some previous tests coming home as practice. We will be doing these together in class as teaching exercises. We are teaching the children strategies to carefully read and take the test, and this will also familiarize them with the basic format of the test, so there should be no surprises or nervousness.  Most of the students have good decoding or "sound it out" skills, but often choose answers quickly and without looking back or making careful and thoughtful choices.  We teach these strategies throughout the year, and hopefully they will become more automatic with each lesson.  Third graders are expected to use higher level thinking skills in their reading, such as compare & contrast, infer, predict, make generalizations, summarize, and state a main idea.  Some practice comprehension sheets will be coming home, too.  Your child should be able to do these independently, but it would be very helpful for you to look it over, and go over any mistakes your child has made, and help them to understand what they did wrong.  One on one help is always the best!
