Weekly Word Lists Word Lists

Welcome to the Weekly Word Lists!

On this page you will find the "First Grade Spelling" letter that will sent home in September. Hopefully, you will find the information and suggestions helpful.

Each week I will post the words from the spelling list that is sent home for homework on Mondays. Please help your child practice reading and writing these words.  Thank You!

First Grade Spelling

Now that your child is ready for first grade, spelling becomes an important part of the language arts experience.  In kindergarten, your child experimented with “inventive” or “temporary” spelling, and will continue to do that during the first grade year as well.  However, this year your child will also begin to learn certain conventions of spelling, as well as how to correctly spell basic sight words.

Each Monday, your child will bring home a spelling list for the week and an assignment that will help him/her learn to spell the new words.  The assignment is due back the following day (Tuesday).  The words will follow a pattern (phonics or word family) or will be basic sight words which may not fit the conventions of spelling and simply must be memorized.  Children are expected to practice these words for spelling and reading.

There will be a weekly spelling test on all of the spelling words.  Some of the previously introduced spelling words may also be included in these tests.  The purpose of the test is to help inform our teaching and let us know which words might need additional practice.  The tests will not be sent home.  If your child is consistently having difficulty we will be in contact with you.

Please save all the spelling lists in a special folder or binder.  Twice yearly we will have two district wide spelling tests (phonics and sight words) and having your lists will make reviewing easier.  As mentioned previously, we will often give a few words on spelling tests that come from previous lists, so continual review and practice of old spelling words is important!

Below is a list of suggestions for ways to help your child practice the spelling words.  A series of short “fun” sessions are more enjoyable and beneficial for your child and you.

We appreciate all your help.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
