WELCOME TO AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION!

The eleventh grade course in Advanced Placement in Language and Composition is a college level course in American literature and the study of rhetoric. The purpose of the literature component of the course is to acquaint you with the major authors and themes in American literature and to help you gain a deeper understanding of the country we call "America." You will be expected to read complex texts closely, to think analytically, to develop creative insight, and to write cogent arguments to support their positions. The writing curriculum focuses on both literary analysis and rhetorical analysis. In this course, you will be encouraged to analyze the writer's language to discover his or her purpose. In addition, you will hone your own writing skills by practicing a variety of forms, including narrative, expository, and argumentative. Students in this course will take the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Examination in May of 2012, and the Regents Examination in English in June of 2012.

Walt Whitman (1819–1892).  Leaves of Grass

I CELEBRATE myself;

And what I assume you shall assume;
For every atom belonging to me, as good belongs to you.

I loafe and invite my Soul;
I lean and loafe at my ease, observing a spear of summer grass.         5

Houses and rooms are full of perfumes—the shelves are crowded with perfumes;
I breathe the fragrance myself, and know it and like it;
The distillation would intoxicate me also, but I shall not let it.

The atmosphere is not a perfume—it has no taste of the distillation—it is odorless;
It is for my mouth forever—I am in love with it;  10
I will go to the bank by the wood, and become undisguised and naked;
I am mad for it to be in contact with me.
