WELCOME TO AMERICAN LITERATURE, CLASS OF 2013!

The eleventh grade course in English is primarily a study of American literature from colonial times to the present. The purpose of the course is to acquaint you with the major authors and themes in American literature and to help you gain a deeper understanding of the country we call "America." The writing curriculum focuses on both literary analysis and proper development of the "thesis" paper. All students at the eleventh grade will take the New York State Comprehensive Examination in English in June of 2012.

A Day by Emily Dickinson

I'll tell you how the sun rose

A ribbon at a time.

The steeples swam in amethyst,

The news like squirrels ran.

The hills untied their bonnets,

The bobolinks begun.

Then I said softly to myself,

"That must have been the sun!"

........................

But how he set, I know not.

There seemed a purple stile

Which little yellow boys and girls

Were climbing all the while

Till when they reached the other side,

A dominie in gray

Put gently up the evening bars,

And led the flock away.
