First Grade Survival Guide

Welcome! The following is helpful information to aid you in getting your child through first grade. I look forward to meeting you so we can work together for a great learning experience for your child. I look forward to an exciting, fun filled year!

Homework: Homework is given every Monday through Thursday.  The assignment is to be completed and returned to school the next day. This will help your child understand that homework is an important part of learning.

***Math Facts, Spelling Words and Reading Vocabulary Words are to be studied daily. Spelling Words and Reading Vocabulary Words are tested  every Friday. The words will be available on line the Friday before the test.

***Every month a calendar will be sent home, indicating study time for Spelling Words, Reading Vocabulary Words and Math Facts. This is due at the end of each month.

Snack: First graders have a healthy snack each day. Please make sure your child knows which food items are for lunch and which are for snack. Please make them items that are easy to eat and nutritious.

Class Parties: First graders have parties for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Notification of the items needed and the children providing them will be available on line  about two weeks before the party.

Conduct: Each day your child will bring home a calendar colored either green, yellow or red. This color will inform you of your child's behavior during that day.The color code is

GREEN (good), YELLOW (needs improvement), RED (poor)

*** PLEASE make sure this calendar remains in your child's folder and is returned daily in his/her book bag.

Gym: All students are required to wear a gym uniform on gym day. This is a white shirt and navy shorts or sweatpants. You may purchase the St. Mary gym clothes.

Book Orders: We will order from the Scholastic Book catalog. Checks only, made out to Scholastic Books.

Mail/Communication Folder: One of the two-pocket folders will be used for this purpose. Please check it daily for completed work,  notes from the office and/or teacher or any other parent information. I will also check it for any information for me or information for the office. Please make sure items are labeled with your child’s name (i.e. envelopes for lunch orders, milk cards, etc.).

Milk Cards: If your child would like milk for his/her lunch, a milk card may be purchased.  The cost is $12.00.

Newspapers and Journal: First graders will use The Weekly Reader this year to supplement Social Studies and Science lessons. The cost is $7. per student. We are also using a journal purchased through the school. The cost is $3. Please turn in money for both as soon as possible.

Your child may be tired at the beginning of the school year.  They are again, adjusting to a long day and a new routine. An early bedtime (I know that's difficult after summer!) helps them with this adjustment.  As busy as we all are, enjoy these days with your children.  They are growing right before your eyes!

Thank you, in advance, for your help and cooperation.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks again!
