Important Announcements and Reminders

Beginning this week all work will be completed in cursive.

Take a look at our science research PowerPoint Presentation!  It is a sub page in this section.

We made a few minor changes to the grading scale during our Professional Development Day last week.  I have posted the grading scale under the Classroom Policies section.  The changes clarify which percentages qualify as + and - on the grading scale.

This Week in Ms. Johnson's Room

Math:  The next multiplication quiz will be on November 19.  It will cover the "toughies".  Please see the Study Guide section for a list of the facts to be studied.

Our focus this week is on using patterns to multiply and multiplying two digit numbers by one multiplier.  We will also practice decimal place value, rename decimals in standard and word form, and practice adding large numbers.

Science:  The connection between science and math grows this week as we use centimeter cubes and geoboards to explore the concepts of volume and area.  The students will be developing and learning the standard formula for determining each.

Social Studies:  Latitude and longitude are the focus of the week!  The chapter 2 test will be on Tuesday, November 17.

Reading:  We will complete, Addie in Charge, this week.  The students will be creating character maps and quilt squares to demonstrate their understanding of theme and characterization.

English:  The final copy of the memorable moment essay is due Friday.  Please see the Project Guideline section for directions.  We will learn about action, being, and linking verbs this week.  There will be a quiz on Monday, November 16 on these three verb types.

Religion:  The students will work in small groups to word the Ten Commandments in modern language and write a paragraph describing what each means.  The chapter 3 test is Thursday.  We will learn how to avoid fouls and respectfully point them out on Friday in PeaceWorks.

Spelling/Handwriting:   We have just a few uppercase cursive letters left to review!  The spelling unit for the upcoming week covers r-controlled vowels.  Vocabulary Workshop unit 5 will be assigned Friday.  I will be working with the students to develop vocabulary cards and use the website to practice the words.  This is the first closed book test!  However, with Parent Conferences next week the unit due date and test will not be until November 24.
