Journey Through the Solar System
Mrs. Thonus

Lights! Camera! Action! The students in room 17 are working hard perfecting their parts for our play about the Solar System. There is so much great scientific information in our play and planetary weather reports that everyone is becoming an expert! Portions of our production are video taped, and music and dance will open and close our space adventure. Don't miss it! Performances are planned for Thursday, April  30 at 2:30 PM and Friday, May 1 at 9:30 AM with a cast party to follow. Please try to reserve one of these times to bring your imagination and take a trip into space! We look forward to seeing you there. Or is it "way out" there?

FRACTIONS ARE FAIR!

This month third graders learn about fractions and have lots of fun dividing all kinds of things into equal portions.

Fractions can be a challenging topic. Working with all types of fractions is critical for a true understanding of this concept.
We will explore fractions of a whole and fractions of a set.  Locating fractions on a numberline is a new concept for third graders.  Relating a numberline to measuring with a ruler to the nearest half or quarter inch helps develop this difficult concept.

One half, one quarter, one third, two thirds, and three quarters are the key fractions for comparing and ordering by quantity and on a numberline.  Please visit the Fraction Fun! webpage on this website for exciting activities and games. To expand your thinking about the fractions all around us click here to see a PowerPoint about The World of Fractions. Have a family discussion about the fractions in this slideshow.
