EXTRA CREDIT HOMEWORK IDEAS Sometimes you finish your homework before the 30 minutes or maybe you would like something extra to do, here are some ideas: *Make a drawing to illustrate what you read for your 20 minutes. *Look up your spelling words in the dictionary and write down the first definition and part of speech. *Use the spelling words to tell a story. *Play Math War with a deck of cards. *Write a poem. *Look in the newspaper for an interesting article. Cut it out and bring it in for Show and Share. Be prepared to tell about the article. *Use everyday recyclable objects from home to create something; sculpture or invention, etc. *Write a letter to a relative or friend. *Make up a song and/or dance to share with the class. *Practice a popular song and sing it for the class. *Write a story using the characters from what you are reading for your 20 minutes. *Retell the story from what you are reading. Add to this list if you have more ideas!

Here are some great ideas and tricks for studying spelling words. The folded paper activity is great for memorizing anything! For spelling, fold a paper lengthwise two times to make four columns. CAREFULLY, copy your "target" word at the top of the first column. Trace over the letters, saying them out loud, and then read the word out loud. Do this 3 times. Fold this column under so you can't see the word. Try writing the word at the top of the second column. If you get it correct, go on to your next "target" word. Target words are the words you do not know how to spell yet. If you did not get the word correct, go back to the first column and retrace the letters and say the word 3 times. Then fold the columns under two times to see just the third column and try spelling the target word again.

Another technique is to look for smaller word segments within a larger word. Also, pronouncing the word the way it is spelled may help. I still need to say Wednesday in three syllables when I spell it. Good Luck and study hard!
