Sight Words

Do you want to help your child learn to read? The most commonly used words in English follow few spelling or pronunciation rules and cause children great difficulty when they are beginning to read. If you help your child master these words and know them "by sight," then s/he will be able to focus on the more important content words. Reading will be more interesting and more enjoyable as a result! I suggest printing each word on an index card and storing the words in a ziplock bag. Mix up the word order each time you practice as I will be testing students using a different word order than the original list. Have fun with this - look for words in books, on posters, on signs, at the grocery store, etc.! Copy the words on slips of paper and have your child play a version of the game Memory, picking up the words when s/he has found a match. Spell out the words using Alphabets cereal or magnetic letters. Practice at the breakfast table or before bedtime, but always keep the practice quick and fun. Let me know if you invent another great way to practice! SIGHT WORDS SHOULD BE REVIEWED NIGHTLY UNTIL THEY ARE MASTERED! Sight word lists and suggestions for sight word activities are located on links to the left under the Sight Word heading. FIRST GRADE IS CURRENTLY LEARNING THE WORDS ON THE SIGHT WORD LIST: Unit R Remember: students are responsible for knowing all previously learned words. Words from previous lists will always be included on sight word tests along with all words from the current list.
