Do It Yourself Interactivities
Have fun and learn too! I've selected the best interactive simulations that put you in control of various molecular scale processes, the story of digestion, a narrative story describing a medical mystery, or scientific equipment in a virtual laboratory.
The Story of Digestion:
Digestion: Choose your favorite food and watch what happens when it moves through your gut.
Science Detective Mystery The Blackout Syndrome: You are a medical investigator tracking down the cause of a mysterious disease somewhere in small-town America.
Virtual Microscopes Virtual Scanning Electron Microscopy: This activity places you at the control of a scanning electron microscope. See the secret of a gecko's foot that allows them to climb walls. Depth of Focus Primer: Learn how to focus in and out of a thick specimen. Molecular Workbench Solids, Liquids, Gases: Caveat: This activity requires you to download software onto your computer. If you cannot do this, you won't be able to complete this activity. This activity puts in you in control of the temperature of a ultra-small box, where atoms and molecules are constantly at play. You can heat them up or cool them down. See what happens!
Home Page of the Molecular Workbench: You will be able to launch the Molecular Workbench from this page. The software will download and install itself on your own computer. We will be using several of the activities this year.
DNA
DNA Workshop: The activity from UNC-TV places you within the cell, involving you with the processes of DNA replication and protein synthesis.
BioInteractive
Bacterial ID Lab: The lab will familiarize you with the science and techniques used to make transgenic flies.
Transgenic Fly Lab: The lab will familiarize you with the science and techniques used to make transgenic flies.
Discovery Health's Interactive Human Body Atlas
Cystic Fibrosis: After viewing the video, click on the [Slides] menu button to review the important vocabulary associated with the video.
Index to the Human Body: Are you interested in learning more about other human diseases or conditions. This index has 240+ other animated interactivities similar to the Cystic Fibrosis activity.
Adaptive Curriculum
Needs for Photosynthesis: This virtual lab will demonstrate the use of the scientific method to isolate and reveal the critical factors involved in photosynthesis.
