BSCS's 5E model: see files below to download original

Overview

The purpose of this area of the website is to provide:

  1. a structure for planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating our middle school biotechnology program.
  2. access to combined academic content, technical skill and employability standards from public-private partnerships.
  3. links to examples and resources for implementing best practices for teaching and learning.
  4. a repository of links to multi-media resources for teaching biotechnology.
  5. templates for student-centered structured project-based learning inquiries.
  6. a means for displaying the results of our collaborative efforts.

Sources of Inspiration

This curriculum planning guide has been inspired by so many people and so many organizations that my poor aging brain hasn't the capacity to store them all.  However, I do want to acknowledge a few of that stand out in my mind at the moment.  Other exemplars of best practice will be gathered together in another webpage in this section of my website.
  1. BioSite Online:  Sandy Derby, the mastermind behind BioSite Online, has integrated several of the most promising teaching and learning practices for engaging and captivating young minds.  My hope is that our own program will be equally inspiring.
  2. Molecular Workbench: The Concord Consortium has developed a powerful tool for the acceleration of the development of molecular reasoning abilities by providing student-controlled interactive molecular simulations.  I intend to customize these instructional tools to facilitate learning of molecular concepts in biotechnology.
  3. KNOW:  This outstanding multi-media portal provides an exemplary model for the dissemination of curricula and for supporting teachers using these middle school science lesson plans.  The lesson plans were created using an assessment-driven research-based model for active learning.

    MIT iCampus PREP collaboration software
MIT and Microsoft Research has produced collaboration software that can be useful for faculty co-authoring a curriculum or by students working together on a team project. I suggest we evaluate this software for use by our curriculum team, which has the added benefit of allowing us to become familiar enough with this software to facilitate its use by our students on team projects we design.
