Course Description
The word "bio-technology" merges two words, biology and technology. Biology is the study of life and technology is the practical application of the science. Biotechnology, then, is the practical application of biology for the discovery of cures for diseases and for the production of better varieties of crops and farm animals. Our course is designed to introduce you to some basic concepts of biotechnology. You will gain an understanding of the fundamental science and an appreciation for what it takes to have a deeply interesting, financially rewarding career in this rapidly growing area of North Carolina's high tech economy.
GoalsBy the end of this course, you will be able to:
1. satisfy your own curiousity about the world by conducting interviews with real scientists, doctors and other very impressive people
2. use your eagle-eyes (acute powers of observation) to record faithful descriptions of the living world
3. use your green thumbs to culture (grow) a variety of plants, animals and micro-organisms used in biological research
4. use your newly learned mad-science skills to operate cool laboratory equipment to identify some amazing biological molecules.
5. design experiments just like real scientists to test your own ideas about the natural living world
6. publish your results for your classmates and/or the world to admire.
Main Themes
1. Biotechnology in modern agriculture for the protection of crops from insects and disease, improving nutritional quality in produced foods, and many other fascinating uses.
2. Biotechnology in modern biomedical research in the search for cures for diseases with a strong focus on cures for cancer, heart disease and diabetes. 3. Biotechnology in the breeding of livestock (cattle, sheep, chicken and other farm animals) for the production of meat, milk and other products. 4. Biotechnology in modern industries focusing on the use of enzymes in common household cleaners and in the production and environmental clean-up of manufactured chemicals. What you can expect from me
My intention is to provide you with interesting hands-on experiences and challenges that will lead you to the cutting edges of science. You can expect me to remind you to be your best in whatever we do no matter how large the challenge. Like the little engine that could, accept whatever is given to you and surprise yourself when you achieve greateness!
What I expect from you An open mind, willingness to learn, sincere effort and persistance. Here are some rules for the classroom that are also rules for life. Follow these rules and no matter who you are or where you start from you will achieve greateness in life.

- Always strive to do your best. (Constantly maintain your focus and attention to the task at hand.)
- Never give up. (Say I can, never say I can't.)
- Adopt a positive attitude so that you can learn from anyone and in any situation. (No whining!)

- Discover the seeds of greatness within yourself by following your own natural curiosity through your own experiences in school and in your daily life.
- Nourish your destiny by educating yourself, not shallowly, but deeply.
