Educational Opportunities
Short Courses:
BioWork: Start here if you are a complete beginner. This is a 128 hour introductory program is designed for those who have no prior experience in a technical industry. It has been written to accomodate those who minimally have a ninth grade education. As it is heavily subsidized by industry, the course is quite affordable. Once you click on the hyperlink, scroll down the page to find the community college nearest you.
Bioprocessing in the Workplace (TM): This is the second-level 128 hour introductory course designed for career changers, for those who have had some college education or for those already employed in a technical workplace.
Two-year programs (geared toward technicians):
Biotechnology-related programs: This hyperlink will bring you to a page describing a variety of two-year programs available through NC Community Colleges.
Four-year programs (essential preparation for career advancement in science and technology related fields):
Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center, BTEC: NC State University runs a variety of four-year programs rand graduate programs elated to biotechnology.
Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise, BRITE: NC Central University runs both an undergraduate and graduate program in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Graduate programs (geared toward research professionals and leading to a Ph.D.)
Besides the graduate programs at NCSU and NCCU described above, UNC has a variety of biotechnology-related graduate programs associated with the medical school.
