Why Not Save The World?
We start with a simple idea - that we can and do make a better world. We do so in so many little ways ... like smiling and making connections with our friends and family that we sometimes hardly notice. Nevertheless, we can make a better world just by our presence.
Middle school, which occurs during the ages of 11-14 is a time when you start to dream big dreams. At the same time you are developing the skills and maturity to take action towards the life you choose. To quote a famous american author:
If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them. - Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
So I encourage you to dream big and think globally. You live in a time when an individual has many more opportunities than in the past to have global influence.
Ordinary citizens of every nation have the ability to connect with other people from around the globe and this creates the possibility of doing something extraordinary. The largest corporations of the world have always conducted business on a global scale. Now the individual human being has the same reach through the technology of the Internet.
Yet even as people make international connections that foster understanding and peace. There are difficult problems in the world that drive peoples apart and foster bitter rivalries. Problems that cross national boundries are known as global issues. And the result is too often hatred and even war.
So with this global perspective in mind, we reframe the opening question, how can we make this world a better place? In this class we will start brainstorming small actions we can take and ways we can connect to other students around the globe to take action with us.
