2008 AIG-GAP
River City
This year I am working hard to get you access to Harvard University's time-travel machine. If all goes well we will be traveling back in time to a 19th century village that is being ravaged by disease.
Here is Harvard University's description of where we will go and what we will do.
As visitors to River City, students travel back in time, bringing their 21st century skills and technology to address 19th century problems. Based on authentic historical, sociological, and geographical conditions, River City is a town besieged with health problems. Students work together in small research teams to help the town understand why residents are becoming ill. Students use technology to keep track of clues that hint at causes of illnesses, form and test hypotheses, develop controlled experiments to test their hypotheses, and make recommendations based on the data they collect, all in an online environment.

Thank you for taking part in the River City Project. The River City Research Team is looking forward to working with you over the coming weeks.
In order for the Research Team to understand what you learn from the project, you will be asked to answer some questions before you begin River City and then answer similar questions after you have worked with River City. These survey questions explore what you think and know about science.
- You need your student username and password to log in.
- You need to complete these questions by yourself.
- It is okay if you are unsure how to respond to some of the questions – just do your best you can to answer everything openly and honestly.
- You should answer the questions at your own pace, but do not spend too much time on any one statement or question.
Now follow these instructions to start the student pre-survey.
- Log in to the Student Dashboard at: http://muve.gse.harvard.edu/student/index.php
- Type your username and password and select [Enter]. Then raise your hand to signal that you are in the Student Dashboard.
- Now select the Student Pre-Survey and raise your hand again when you have done that.
- Type your first and last name in the two blanks and then click on “Next”.
- Please WAIT patiently while we go through the first sample question as an entire class.
